I was checking out my tumblr today and I thought it was cool to watch the highs and lows of it. I think you can learn a lot about a person about the books they keep in their bookshelf and the posts they make on a microblogging website like tumblr. What my tumblr will look like 10 years down the road? And what would people who know me make of me tumblr should they find it by accident?

I've sunk so much of my life into academic pursuits

And to what avail?

Academic pursuits are not sexy, not pleasing to the 5 senses, and rarely seem to escape the ivory (or in my case, concrete) tower. Who cares if I will spend the next 4 or so years of my life discovering how genes get regulated in the context of the nervous system? Maybe if I get lucky, I’ll help pave some ground on the way to cure a disease but that’s a big if. Considering how funding is and all the politics and ego that are involved in research, I’m much less certain about my ability to contribute something meaningful than a few years ago. And what if I do end up articulating a cool new way to understand how discourses of gender? I know so many people who are shocked by the notion that bisexuality exists, and that’s about as un-radical as we can get here. I’d like to believe I’m contributing something meaningful but I really won’t know that until I’m much older. I probably should invest myself in some sort of concrete community service or publish something scholarly in a more public manner, so I can feel like I’m actually doing something with my life instead of over-analyzing narrow subsets of knowledge that most people don’t care about.

And academia isn’t sexy either. It’s certainly hasn’t scored me any points with anyone I’ve ever dated previously. I’d much rather be a piano virtuoso or a poet than an academic any day.

Writer/director Chad Hartigan was our first interview at Sundance this year, and he was perfectly happy to talk at length about his second feature, This Is Martin Bonner. The film was an official Sundance 2013 selection, and it went on to win the Best of NEXT Audience Award. Bonner follows the title character (Paul Eenhoorn), an older man forced to change jobs and cities, as he establishes an unlikely friendship with a recently released convict (Richmond Arquette). We talked with Hartigan about making movies, making friends, and disintegration loops.

So I’m going to tell you guys a story about the person I really like.

Her name is Kida. And this is her cosplaying Jack Frost at Ohayocon.

So, every night at Ohayocon, me and Kida were cosplaying Jack Frost. She was Jack, and I was his genderbend who I’ve been calling Joyce. So, we were in the hotel lobby where they give a free dinner to their guests and we walk past, and there’s this little boy who goes “Mom! It’s Jack Frost!”

And his mother invited us both to sit with them and eat dinner. Now, he didn’t quite get that I was a girl Jack until a little later, but that’s not the point. The point is that Kida basically leaned towards this kid and was like “You can see me?”

The two of us sat with this little boy for a good hour or so, and he kept talking to Kida, convinced he was seeing Jack Frost. He was so amazed and excited that he told Jack that he had to protect himself from Pitch because he was a bad man and he meant business. He wanted to make sure Jack would protect himself and everyone else. At one point he got really quiet and said “You fell in the lake and died.” or something to that extent, to which Kida QUICKLY replied with “But the man in the moon saved me!” And that little boy just got so thrilled.

I swear, this kid was completely awestruck to meet Jack Frost, and it only got better.

The following night, on Sunday, we were still at the con, and once again, Kida and I were Jack and Joyce Frost. And we met him again. So I happened to have my camera and I snapped some pictures of them. This little boy kept telling Kida about all these other guardians that existed, and had all these great stories to tell who he believed was Jack Frost. And he and Kida wound up playing together, and I’ve never seen a little kid have so much fun before. It turned out that we all ended up going to the pool together, and it just didn’t stop.

Long story short: My friend Kida cosplayed Jack Frost and made a little boy happier than you could ever imagine. And as far as I’m concerned, this little boy is Kida’s Jamie Bennett.

The second day when we saw him, I really wasn’t expecting to at all. So when we walked in and he was at the table, a grin plastered itself to my face as I hurried over yelling, “Buddyy!” And the look on Dorian’s face…I can’t even describe it. It was priceless.

His mom told us that he had been talking all day about how he missed talking to Jack Frost and how he hoped to see him again. And that right there made me latch on to the boy even more. So I just had to pull up a chair and talk with him again.

He had then proceeded to ask me where my staff was (I haven’t finished it yet) and my friend was dressed as Harry Potter so we whipped up a story that Harry was helping me find Pitch who had my staff and we were going to go beat him again to get it back. A little while later he asked where Ron and Hermione were and I told them that they were already on the search and they were going to send sparks in the sky when they found Pitch so we could hurry over to them.

At some point Polmun had to leave to do something and while I was alone with Dorian, he started talking about how he didn’t believe in the Sandman. So I asked him why. And he told me that he just didn’t see a reason to. So I whipped up a story about how Pitch gives him the nightmares he had and asked if he had good dreams too. To which he replied he did. So I told him that Sandy was the one who saved him from the nightmares, giving him the good dreams that came at night, promptly tapping him on the forehead for emphasis. And I really think I got him believing again.

After a bit he said the same thing about the Tooth Fairy because he always tried to stay up, but he never saw her. So again I quickly started telling him about how the Tooth Fairy worked with the tiny baby fairies zooming into the room and flying under his pillow to snatch up the tooth and replace it with a quarter quick as a humming bird (and yes, I totally did the ‘quick as a bunny’ thing). And the look on his face only told me that he believed in her too now.

Well Polmun came back and we informed him that there were mermaids in the pool. Of course he didn’t believe us…but we took him over and two of my friends had mermaid tails on and were swimming around in the pool. He quickly asked his mom if he could swim with them…and they went and got his trunks. And in the mean time, I changed into my own suit, making sure to keep my wig on and a bit of binding with a shirt over my suit so I could still be Jack for him.

I was down before him, but when he came down, we instantly started playing again.

There was a point where everyone went over to the hot tub and I asked if he wanted to join…which he responded with, “No…I don’t like hot water.” So I told him I didn’t either…that if I touched it I would melt. Well the water jets in the pool were blowing in warm water. So anytime I got near one after that he yelled at me to get away because, “You’ll melt if you touch that because you’re a winter spirit!” So I made a game of it, running back and forth to see if he would catch me before the jets. And he did…every time.

And I can honestly say that I have never had more fun in a weekend.

I usually don’t connect with kids so easily…but this little boy had something special inside. And I really hope I made his weekend…because he sure made mine. ))

My body is cringing at how cute this all is.

I KNOW THIS LITTLE BOY. AND HIS MOM. THEY ARE BOTH AMAZING PEOPLE AND I LOVE THEM. <3 <3 <3
